  • Head-to-toe check after immediate life threats are managed.
  • Look for wounds, bleeding, deformity, tenderness, burns and other injuries.
  • Suspected spinal injury: minimize unnecessary movement and manage according to training.
  • Possible neurological symptoms: note orientation, speech, strength, sensation and balance without delaying EMS or oxygen.
  • Protect the casualty from excessive heat or cooling and continue monitoring.
  • For a serious casualty, do not give food or drink unless directed by appropriate medical personnel.

Rule: For a life-threatening emergency, use local EMS first. Contact DAN for diving-medical assistance. Do not delay stabilization or medical assessment just to travel directly to a chamber.

  • Document the incident and preserve relevant dive-computer information.
  • Restock first-aid, oxygen and AED supplies.
  • Debrief the team: what worked and what should change.
  • Update the EAP when a gap in equipment, access or communication is found.
